Coins for Kids Project Recently at the Lions ANZI Forum on the Gold Coast the Lions Club of Simpson (a small community in V2 district) presented and won the New Inventors Show for an innovative community project called Coins for Kids. In so doing the club benefited by $500 and raised awareness of the project nationally.
Lions, Lioness and Leo Clubs in Victoria are invited to join in this community activity during March 2012.
How does it work:
Lions Clubs approach their local school(s) to participate in collecting and laying coins along a line in their local community
Schools and Clubs will share the money raised with 50% to a Childrens Charity chosen by the school, 50% to nominated Children''''''''s Charities chosen by the District (Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation).
By all working together the project will raise awareness of Lions Clubs and their willingness to serve their local communities.
This project requires limited resource and is a good public relations project. A pdf version of the project kit is attached for your information.

Righteous Pups - Update 03 June 2011Dennis, the Lions V1-4 Autism Assistance Dog in Training, has received donations from V1-4 clubs to a total of $7934.26. These funds have been used for Dennis training fees, healthcare and a few extra toys just so he knows he is loved.
The Lions Club of Heidelberg-Warringal have partnered with a local family in their community to raise in excess of $29,000 for Marcos dog. The additional funds of $4095.00 will be reallocated to Dennis total, making an overall total for Dennis of $12,029.26.
Dennis is due to graduate in August 2011, and will be placed with a child within the V1-4 Lions District. Any club who wishes a visit from Dennis will need to contact Jobakerj@righteouspups.org.au or ph. 0439 618 706 prior to August.
Any other dog in training will still be available after August for a club visit.
We are half-way through a District commitment to support Righteous Pups for 3 years, and with club disbursements for the 2010-2011 year coming up, please give a thought to supporting this project.
Very soon the pups are moving their base to a new property, by the end of August, and will need a lot of assistance from locals and Lions with concreting, fencing, re-furbishing buildings etc., once council permits are obtained.

Coins for Kids at BirchipBirchip P12 School was a buzz of activity on May 5th as people laid out their coins to support the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research foundation through the Coins for Kids Project.
The day began with a BBQ lunch cooked by Birchip Lions members and was enjoyed by the students, staff and many community members who came along to support the day.
The school children and staff contributed enthusiastically and participated in friendly banter with their class-mates as they competed against the other grades to make the longest line. At the ned of the activity the longest line was made by the grade 6 students with 11.33 metres of coins, which was closely followed by the grade 5 students and the preps who both had 11.1 metre lines.
The year 12s were close behind with a line of 10.9 metres. While the staff were not in the competition they did contribute 17.4 metres of coins to the cause. Overall the event raised $967.40 which is a wonderful effort from them.
Congratulation to the Birchip Lions Club and the P12 School.

Righteous Pups - Update 03 Sept 2010Hi Everyone! Over the past few months I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you at various club dinners. At first I was a little unsure of some of the halls, and so many people, but I have become a lot more confident in my role.
I have also been busy rapidly growing as I am soon to reach my full height (us Labradors reach full height by 9 months and from there we just fill our more - My trainers say.
I invested a lot of energy in this process and I am now fondly referred to as the horse. As most of you who met me commented...he is going to be a big boy... well, I haveve done us proud...I am the biggest of my litter!
Well, enough about my growth, as many of you will see me over the next little while at your various club functions. Recently two of my trainers went overseas to attend a conference with other assistance dog trainers and to visit training centres that are like mine. While they were gone, I went and stayed with another dog in the program, Holly.
Holly is a member of Righteous Pups Tricks and Demonstrations Team and she can do lots of cool stuff like ride a skateboard, get a bottle of drink out of the fridge! She also lives on a property with a dam, so I had heaps of room to stretch my long legs!
I loved it, but it is nice to be back into the normal routine of things.
I am progressing well with my skills and expanding my knowledge base. My public access trainer says I am doing heaps better with my confidence levels in new environments. Going out and about is cool now, because lots of people stop my trainer to tell her I am gorgeous! (positive words never go astray). Some people ask my trainer if I am a Labrador! Of course I am, but I have that really thick coat and distinctive wave in my fur. You do not see it commonly in labs, but my trainers say my breeding lines go back decades!
Yesterday we had a group of students visit from the Macedon Ranges. To show my growth in confidence, I participated in the socialisation challenge: walking under a waving, rainbow coloured parachute, approaching students dressed in character with hats and masks, and walking confidently through a zone with moving objects. I was not scared at all! Because of my growth in confidence I also get to show the younger or less confident dogs how to behave in public.
Young dogs look up to older dogs so they look at me and copy what I am doing.
My obedience skill are coming along and I hope to be able to show you these on my next visit. Thanks again for all your support....it really has made a difference! I tell all my fellow labs, I am a very rare and special Lionlab...
I will write again soon. Cheers, Dennis District 201 V1-4 Project Dog
Righteous Pups - Update 02 May 2010Our V1-4 Adopt-a-Dog, Dennis, is growing into a rather large puppy now.
Together with his mate, Pablo (who is nearly ready to go to a family) Dennis sat happily under the table, chewing a leather bone, at a committee meeting last week. I also unexpectedly met trainer Jen with Dennis at the MarketPlace in Bendigo last week, where Jen was acclimatising Dennis to crowds, noise, lights and the bustle of everyday living.
Clubs in the Bendigo zone are beginning a huge letter drop, advertising the need for foster families for the Pups. With one response so far, managing director Jo Baker is delighted with the assistance the Pups have received from Lions.
If any club has made a donation either to Cabinet Treasurer Paul Tjioe or directly to Righteous Pups, could you please let DG Jill know, so I can report a total raised so far to the District clubs.
Please state if this donation is for Dennis, or for another dog or family your club is supporting.

Righteous Pups - Update 01 Feb 2010Bendigo Lions Club sponsored a successful motion to Lions District V1-4 at its convention in October 2009.
This motion was that Lions should assist the Righteous Pups Organisation.
Righteous Pups suports the training of Austistic Assistance Dogs.
The term "autism" was first used in 1943 by Dr Leo Kanner. He published a paper about a group of children he had observed in his clinic. These children were unlike most others - withdrawn, non-verbal, with bizarre ritualistic and repetitive behaviours.
We would ask each Lions Club, when organising its financial plan for the next disbursement, to ensure the expansion of the training program for these special dogs. Through our support more children with autism will benefit from a special assistance dog.
Dennis is one of a litter of 7 pups, bought at a cost of $1500 each. By the time he has completed his training at around 18 months of age, and is ready to be placed with an autistic child from a needy family near a club within District V1-4, he will have cost Righteous Pups $29,000.00
During those 18 months he will be placed with a foster family, and will attend "school" Monday to Friday. Our District is supporting Dennis during his training, and Dennis will always have the Lions logo on his coat.
Every 3 months, an update will be sent to clubs, detailing Dennis''s progress during his training.
Clubs can support Dennis by holding a fundraiser for him, or by channeling some of your funds at disbursement time to Righteous Pups. Send your cheque to District Treasurer Paul Tjioe, with a note saying the money is for Righteous Pups.
When Dennis is placed with an autistic child, we will then be allocated another puppy to support.
If your club is already supporting a family in their fundraising efforts, please continue to do so, with whatever financial arrangements are already in place.
Please let DG Jill know of your support in this instance.
